The High Court on Monday observed that the reputation of the entire police force is being maligned for the activities of a few of its members.
The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with the observation while hearing on a writ.
"Police members go unpunished despite indulging in corruption. They are making money through corruption," said the court in its observation.
Earlier, on the night of June 27 this year, police detained Sonali Bank's senior principal officer Ibrahim Khalil and one of his female colleagues in city's Uttara when they were returning home after having dinner at a restaurant.
They were taken to Uttara (east) police ASI Mostafizur Rahman who demanded Tk 20,000 to them.
Ibrahim gave the ASI Tk 6,000 and got released with a promise to pay the remaining Tk 14,000 later. The banker then took treatment at hospital as he received injuries.
After some days, the ASI asked Ibrahim's colleague to meet him personally and told her that she would not have to pay the remaining money if meets him.
Ibrahim lodged a complaint to the DMP commissioner and the IGP urging them to take action against the police members.
He also submitted the call records of the police official and his colleague and medical certificate.
On July 25, Ibrahim filed a writ with the HC as the police authorities did not take action in this regard.
Hearing on the writ, the court asked the authorities concerned to take action against the police members.
