Zontas centennial event held
Showcasing the power of women, the Zonta International Centennial (100 years) Anniversary celebrated by the five Zonta clubs in Dhaka on November 23 at Satarkul, Pachkhola (Madani Avenue), Vatara, in the capital.
Industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun graced the occasion as chief guest. Rubana Huq, President BGMEA and Ztn Dilruba Ahmed, Regional Representative Centennial Anniversary Endowment Campaign, Past Zonta International and Zonta International Foundation Board Director graced the occasion as guests of honor.
Zonta is an International Service Organization of women in Business or profession working with the mission advancing the status of women through service and advocacy. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo New York Zonta International and it is a leading advocate for women's rights.
It has 27,000 members in 63 countries. Every Biennium Zontians are elected at the International, Districts and Clubs to run its respective offices at the different levels.
During the formation of Zonta Clubs in Bangladesh, three significant women Lyla Zakariah Murshed, past District 25 Governor, Anwari Kabir and past District 25 Governor Sarwari Rahman had a vision to bring the professional women to a platform to raise their voices. They focused on community work and even demanded reserved seats in the parliament for women. Sarwari Rahman is still an active Zontian.
A souvenir was launched by chief guest highlighting with Zonta's local and global projects.
In the last 100 years, women have come a long way but still there are gender gaps in education & skills. Violence against women is a burning issue and Zonta's signature projects are "Ending child marriage" and say "No to violence".
Zontians all over the world are committed to make the Centennial celebration insightful, inspiring and successful, encouraging for every men and women, realizing that for any nation to prosper there must be gender equality to uphold the principles of social justice.
The convener of the event was renowned fashion designer and event planner Tootli Rahman. The theme of the occasion is "A Vintage Affair". It began with seven Tagore women played by noted actors, singers and Mrs Bangladesh -playing the roles of Ashalota, Chopola, Kodombari, Shyama, Katy, Komola and Monihara.
At the ending moment of the event the Zontians walked the ramp with outfits from the Zamindari age, Mughal era and of vintage timesas part of the group celebrations for the centennial event.
