Price of onion decreases, rice increases in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR, Nov 22: When the price of onion in the district is decreasing, that of rice is increasing without any reason.
The price of rice has increased by Tk 2 to 3 per kg in local markets. As a result, local buyers are suffering again within a very few days of the onion price hike.
Wholesalers and retailers alleged that a syndicate has increased the price though millers have stored sufficient rice.
Wholesalers said millers have played a trick in this connection.
On the other hand, Rice Mill Owners' Association leaders denied the allegations.
Local sources said the price of rice has increased by Tk 100 to 200 per 50-kg bag. Earlier, a bag of 50-kg 28 variety parboiled rice was sold at Tk 1,630 whereas it is now selling at Tk 1,750 to 1,800 in local markets.
Per 50-bag 29 variety parboiled rice was sold at Tk 1,450 before, now it is selling at Tk 1,700.
The price of Guti Swarna has increased from Tk 1,500 to 1,550, and Miniket from Tk 1,900 to 2,150.
Per 50-kg bag of Chinigura is now selling at Tk 5,000 while the price of Katari has increased by Tk 4 to 5 in per kg.
Rice traders said the price of rice has increased by Tk 100 to 300 per bag since the last week.
Rice trader Chanchal of Bahadur Bazaar said, "I usually buy rice from various rice mills of the district. As the quality of the rice of miller Shaheb Babu in Poolhat is good, the price is always a bit higher than other mills. As the price of all rice has increased, we are facing buyers' queries."
President of Dinajpur Rice Mill Owners Association Mosaddek Hossen said the allegations against price hike of rice are lame as the price in the markets is less than the price fixed by the government. Farmers will get fair price if they can sell their produce at a high rate.
He hoped the price will be reduced after the new rice enters market.
In this connection, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension here Md Towhidul Iqbal said the yield will exceed this year's target in the district. Aman paddy was cultivated in 2.59 lakh hectares of land this year, and the production target is 7.50 lakh metric tons of paddy.
On the other hand, the price of onion has suddenly started decreasing in the markets of Hili Land Port in the district where the price is still rising all over the country. The price of onion has decreased by Tk 70 to 80 per kg within a day.
Onion is now selling at Tk 120 to 150 per kg in various upazilas including Sadar Upazila of the district. The availability of onion in the markets decreased its price, said the authorities concerned.
Local sources said many traders started releasing onion from their godowns in fear of getting rotten.
Like everywhere in the country, per kilogram of onion was sold at Tk 200 to 230 in the market of Hili till Saturday last, but from Sunday it has started decreasing. Now onion is selling at Tk 150 to 160 per kg in the markets of Hili Land Port.
