Paddy procurement drive begins in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA, Nov 20: Aman paddy procurement drive of the government began in the district on Wednesday amid much enthusiasm.
In this connection, the Department of Food organised a function on the local supply depot (LSD) premises in Khankasharif area of the district town in the morning.
Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini addressed the function as chief guest.
Among others, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Agriculturist Masudur Rahman, General Secretary (GS) district Awami League Abu Barkar Siddique, and Gaibandha Municipality Mayor Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon were present at the event as special guests.
With Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Alamgir Kabir Saikat in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by District Controller of Food Zahirul Islam and GS of district Krishak League Dipak Kumar Pal.
Speakers termed the government as farmer friendly and thanked it for buying paddy from the farmers directly to help them earn profit against the valuable crop Aman paddy.
Whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remained beside the farmers and would remain beside them in future.
Considering farmers' interest, the government took the decision to purchase paddy from the farmers so that they are benefitted economically.
The whip also urged the food officials and the staff to procure paddy from the farmers sincerely without any harassment and criticism.
Later, Whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini formally inaugurated the paddy procurement drive in the district through cutting a red tape and purchasing paddy from the farmers as chief guest.
At that time, Sadar UNO Prasun Kumar Chakrabartee and others were also present.
District food office sources said at least 13,404 metric tons of Aman paddy would be procured from the farmers through 11 purchasing centres of the district this season.
