BARISHAL, Nov 17: Out of 300 educational institutions, 174 including 17 girls' institutions in six districts under Barishal Division have got monthly payment order (MPO) status this year.
Meanwhile, about 3,000 educational institutions of the country have got the MPO status recently.
Among a total of 994 private institutions, only 42 including four girls' schools got the status in the districts.
It was alleged that many old institutions with good academic records and infrastructures have been kept out of the list, and some with the backing of local public representatives have got the status.
According to sources at Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Department, they had no role in this connection. Besides, they have no exact statistics about the number of the MPO-listed institutions in the region.
Centring the MPO enlistment, many complaints of corruption have been found.
A total of three high schools in Bakerganj Upazila of the district have got MPO status whereas Alhaz Abdur Rashid Mollah Zahima Khatun Girls' High School, established in 2001, has been kept out of the list. The school fulfilled all the criteria for getting MPO status.
The school has an academic building on 12,000 square feet. There are 300 students and 15 teachers at the school. The government approved this institution as a secondary high school in January, 2014. The pass rate of the school in secondary level is above 90 per cent.
Local sources alleged the school did not get MPO status due to lack of political backing.
Among the 357 MPO-listed dakhil madrasas in the country, only 25 madrasas including four girls' madrasas got MPO status in Barishal Division this year.
Out of total 93 higher secondary colleges, 13 including five women's colleges got MPO status in the division.
A total of 493 lower secondary schools got MPO status this year. Of those, only 13 schools including one girls' school got the status. Among the 62 agricultural institutions, only eight in the division; among the 283 business management institutions, 26 including one girls' institution; among the 56 degree colleges, 10 including three women's colleges; and among 175 vocational institutions, only nine in six districts got the MPO status this year.
According to sources at the Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Department, there are total 1,639 schools, 22 colleges, 1,167 madrasas, and 38 school and colleges in six districts of the division, but they do not have the total number of the MPO-listed institutions.
However, a complaint against the MPO-enlistment system in the southern part of the country has been alleged. At the same time, it was found that the girls' institutions were mostly deprived.
