Seven people were killed and at least 15 injured in a gas pipeline explosion at a building in Patharghata area of Chattogram city on Sunday.
Of the deceased, four were men, two women and one was a child.
Kotwali Police Station OC Md Mohsin said the gas line exploded with a big bang on the ground floor of a five-storey building 'Kunjaban' on Patharghata Brick Field Road around 9am.
Two sides' walls of the building collapsed due to the explosion that left 22 people injured.
They were immediately whisked off to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared seven dead, including
Fire Service and Civil Defence members are conducting rescue operation till filing of the report around 10:04am.
Chattogram Fire Service deputy director Jasimuddin told media that the old gas line can cause the accident.
"Besides, investigation is underway to find out if there was any leakage in the pipe line, chemical storage or an act of sabotage," he added.
Chattogram city mayor AZM Nasir Uddin, ward councillors Islaim Bali, Jawharlal Hazari, Shaibal Das, CCC chief enginner Lt Col Sohel Ahmed, CDA chairman Jahirul Alam Dovash, CMP commissioner M Mahbubur Rahman and city BNP president Dr Shahadat Hossain visited the spot.
Two committees have been formed to investigate the incident.
Four of the deceased were identified as Nurul Islam, 31, and Anny Barua, 40, head teacher of Meherati Government Primary School in Patiya, Arpita Nath, 16, a ninth grader, and Nurul Islam, 30, a worker.
