Farmers produce poison-free vegetables in Narail
NARAIL, Nov 14: Local farmers are passing busy time cultivating winter vegetables in the district.
As the vegetables are poison-free, their demand is very high in both retail and wholesale markets.
The farmers are becoming interested to cultivate winter vegetables as they have been getting much profit for the last several years.
Farmer Yunus Sheikh of Gobra Union in Sadar Upazila said hundreds of farmers like him have been engaged in cultivating various kinds of winter vegetables this season. Since the area is famous for its vegetables, the local farmers usually cultivate those round the year.
However, at least three types of cauliflower are cultivated most here. The saplings planted in Bhadra are generally sold in Ashwin and Kartik, and those planted in Kartik are sold in Poush. Similarly, the saplings planted in Poush are sold in Falgun.
Various mixed vegetables including sweet pumpkin are also occasionally planted in the district.
Deputy Assistant Agricultural Officer of Kolara Union Fariduddin said local farmers are using pheromone traps and vermicompost fertilisers instead of pesticides and chemical fertilisers to cultivate the poison-free vegetables.
However, the agriculture department is cooperating through providing quality seeds, fertilisers, and farming suggestions for producing the poison-free vegetables.
District Training Officer of the Department of Agricultural Extension Anuj Kumar Biswas said they are regularly visiting the vegetable fields and providing farmers with free seeds, fertilisers, necessary advices and trainings for cultivating poison-free winter vegetables.
He hoped that this year they will get good results in vegetable farming.
He also said this year's winter vegetable farming target in the district is 2,260 hectares of land. Out of this, 810 ha have already been brought under the cultivation.
