Rohingya man killed in 'gunfight'

A Rohingya man, accused in robbery case, was killed in a gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Thursday.

Three police members were also injured during the shootout that took place at hilly area near Shalbagan Rohingya Camp around 1am.

The deceased was identified as Mahmudul Hasan. He was accused in number of cases, including of robbery, police claimed.

Teknaf Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Das said they arrested Mahmudul on Wednesday.

According to his confessional statement, a team of law enforcers alongwith Mahmudul conducted a drive in the area to recover arms.

Sensing their presence, the cohorts of Mahmudul opened fire on the team, forcing the police personnel to fire back in self-defence.

The law enforcers, later, found bullet-injured Muamudul on the scene and rushed him to Upazila Health Complex. But he died on way to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.  

Three arms, two magazines, 18 bullets and a foreign-made pistols were recovered from the spot, the OC said.
