8.8kg gold seized at Dhaka airport

Customs preventive team seized 76 gold bars weighing around 8.8 kg from inside an aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday late evening.
Sources at the airport said both the preventive team of Dhaka Customs House and Airport Armed Police had secret information that a gold consignment was being brought from Abu Dhabi by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, reports UNB.
Customs Preventive team of the airport started searching inside the flight, which landed in Dhaka from Abu Dhabi via Sylhet at around 3:40 pm, after all the passengers got down from it.
“Based on secret information, we started searching from 4:00pm. After five hours of frantic efforts, we got the gold consignments finally at around 9:06pm, said Sajjad Hossain, Assistant Commissioner (Customs).
Seventy six gold bars were kept hidden inside the pipes of six seats. 48 gold bars were recovered from inside the pipes of four seats, while 28 others from inside the pipes of two seats, he added.
