Bangladesh paying for developed countries’ callousness: Prof Nishat

Bangladesh is paying for climate change effects brought about by the callousness of developed countries and despite facing the highest risks, its preparedness is the best in the world, said Prof Emeritus Ainun Nishat of Brac University.
Professor Nishat was addressing "A conversation with Brbel Hhn, Sohara Mehroze Shachi and Ainun Nishat on Climate Justice & Screening of the Documentary 2040 - The Regeneration" at Brac Centre Inn on November 5, 2019. The event was organised by BRAC Business School and the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER).
Equal importance must be laid on adaptation and mitigation while increasing capacity to address disaster risks, creating funds and adopting advanced technologies, said Prof Nishat of the C3ER. Climate change is posing health risks, he said, adding, "Women are being affected. Increasing salinity is leading to eclampsia in women in coastal areas. Many are facing fertility issues. Every family in these areas should have a tank for drinking water." On Bangladesh's successes, Prof Nishat said government initiatives have brought down flood and cyclone deaths, which used to go up in the thousands even a couple of decades ago. He, however, warned that it would be hard to sustain such successes in the absence of adequate funds.
Another speaker, Sohara Mehroze Shachi, a research associate from United Nations Development Programme, said, "Awareness must be raised on the environmental impacts of climate change. Success can be attained if youths can be involved."
