BCB plans talks on cricketers’ strike

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has moved to hold talks on a strike by cricket players over a pay hike and other demands in an effort to break the deadlock.

Speaking to reporters in Dhaka on Wednesday, Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, chief executive officer of BCB, announced the plan to hold the talks later in the day with the striking players.

A day earlier, BCB President Nazmul Hassan said the strike by players was part of a conspiracy to destabilise Bangladesh cricketing ahead of their scheduled tour of India.

On Tuesday, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, or FICA, expressed concern over the conditions that led Bangladeshi players to go on strike.

The Bangladesh’s cricketers went on strike on Monday to press home their 11-point charter of demands, including a pay hike, immediate resignations of president and general secretary of Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh, reversing the BCB’s decision to abandon the franchise-based model and lifting the salary cap in the Dhaka Premier League.

The development comes a month after the BCB decided to abandon the Bangladesh Premier League franchise-based model, cutting into the cricketers’ income.
