The main suspect in Chattogram doctor Shah Alam murder case was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Bashbaria in Sitakunda upazila early Wednesday.
Deceased Najir Ahmed Sumon alias Kalu, 26, was the leader of a notorious robber gang, the RAB said.
The elite force arrested human hauler driver Omar Faruque, 19, on Tuesday in connection with the killing, said Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, assistant director (media) of RAB-7
According to his confessional statement, a team of RAB-7 conducted a drive in Bashbaria around 4:30am to arrest Kalu.
Sensing the presence of the team, the associates of Kalu opened fire on the team, forcing the RAB personnel to fire back in self-defence.
Later, the elite force found the bullet-hit body of Kalu on the scene. They also recovered two firearms and 27 bullets from the spot.
On October 17, Dr Alam, 58, was hacked to death by miscreants while returning home from his work place. He was the pediatric department head of Medina Hospital in Saudi Arabia. Recently, he opened a chamber ‘Baby Care’ at Kumira bazar to serve the people of his locality.
