Fire kills boy, burns 3, in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 19: One child was killed and three others were injured of a same family in a fire at a house in Double Mooring area of teh port city on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Ashraful, 5, son of Amir Hossain.
Four members of the family were injured in the fire in Mollapara. Although the cause of the fire could not be known, locals say they suspect an electric short-circuit might have sparked it.
Jahirul Haque Bhuiyan, in-charge of CMCH police outpost said that the injured were brought to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where Ashraful succumbed to his injuries around 7am.
His father Amir, 45, mother Khaleda Akter, 30, and elder sister Tania, 7, are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Besides, another fire had destroyed over 100 shops in the Jahur Hawkers Market and the adjoining Jalalabad markets of the city early hours of Saturday.
Jashim Uddin, the assistant director of Agrabad Fire Service said the fire started in the Jalalabad market in Kotwali around 4am on Saturday before spreading to nearby areas.
At least 130 shops in the two markets were damaged by the blaze. Firefighters tamed the flames around 5:45 am, said Jashim.
But the authorities could not immediately determine the cause of the fire and the extent of damage.
Two firemen suffered minor injuries during the containment efforts, said Jashim. "The initial indications are that around 130 shops were burnt in the fire," said Kotwali Police OC Mohammed Mohsin.
"About 20 to 25 of these were housed in the hawkers' market while the rest were situated in the Jalabad market," he added. Stores in the two markets mainly sell clothes for low prices, making it a popular destination for shoppers in the city.
