The investigation into Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat's illegal arms and drugs related cases were transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) by Detective Branch of Police.
Samrat has been expelled from the post of president of Jubo League Dhaka South following his arrest over his alleged ties to casino business in the capital.
Sarwar-Bin-Kashem, Director (legal and media) of RAB said, "We've been given the order on Wednesday night to investigate the cases."
Samrat and his close aide Arman were arrested by RAB from Chauddagram in Cumilla on October 6.
"Samrat has been taken to the RAB-1 offices after the Detective Branch handed over him," Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, Senior Assistant Director of RAB media wing, said on Thursday.
Earlier, the RAB conducted a five-hour raid on Samrat's office in Kakrail's Bhuiyan Trade Centre with him in tow. They subsequently recovered a foreign pistol, 1,160 Yaba tablets, 19 bottles of foreign liquor, two kangaroo hides and 'electrical torture equipment.'
A mobile court handed Samrat a six-month prison sentence for possession of kangaroo skins under the Wild Animal Protection Act and he was later sent to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
Two cases were also filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act and Arms Act with the Ramna Police Station.
But the police's plea for a 20-day remand to grill Samrat in the cases was stayed after he was hospitalised for chest pain. He was sent back to jail after being released from hospital.
He was later brought to Dhaka Magistrate Court for his remand hearing. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammed Tofazzal Hossain granted police 10 days to grill Samrat.
The elite police force received the documents clearing it to investigate the cases late on Wednesday, he added.
The same day, he was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, while RAB filed the cases against him with Ramna Police Station.
On October 7, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station Md Mafuzul Haque, also the Investigation Officer (IO) in the narcotics case, and OC (investigation) Jahirul Haque and IO of the arms case, appealed to a Dhaka court to remand Samrat for 10 days each in the two cases. The court was unable to pass any order as the former Jubo League leader fell sick.
On October 8, Samrat was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by the jail authorities, after he complained of chest pain.
Later, he was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), from where he was discharged on October 12.
On Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court remanded Samrat for 10 days in the two cases and was kept in Detective Branch's (DB) custody.
