2 suspected drug traders killed in ‘gunfight’

Two suspected drug dealers were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Hoaikong Satgharia Para in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Zia alias Babul, 30, son of Shamsul Alam; and Azim Ullah, 46, son of Kefayet Ullah in the upazila.

Babul was wanted in several criminal cases, police said.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, said police arrested Babul on Wednesday afternoon.

Acoording to his confessional statement, a team of the law enforcers alongwith Babul conducted a drive in the area around 4am to recover arms.

As the team reached the spot, Babul's associates opened fire and tried to snatch the criminal, the OC said.

Babul and Azim sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight. They were taken to a local hospital where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.

Four policemen were also injured in the shootout, the OC said.

A shutter gun, five light guns, 36 bullets, and 5,000 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
