Around 650 areas were identified as erosion-prone by the Water Resources Ministry. Of the areas, around 60 to 70 are identified as most vulnerable to erosion. To prevent erosion and save cropland, the government has taken steps to increase heights and expand the width of dams across the country.
Besides, hundreds of acres of land under the Ministry have been grabbed by encroachers. The executive engineers of Water development Board (WDB) were asked to submit reports within a month mentioning the names of the illegal occupants in 64 districts. As soon as the reports are received, the authority will start recovering the land.
To implement the decisions, the Water Resources Ministry has taken 94 projects involving Tk 7932.45 crore to prevent river erosion, repairing flood protection embankments and dredging to face the next flood. At the same time, additional Tk 382 crore was also allocated to meet up the emergency works like dumping of geo-bags to prevent erosion.
While talking to the Daily Observer at his office on Sunday, Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem said that the government is sincere to prevent river erosions and recover the land from the land grabbers.
"We can prevent river erosions this year by taking pre-cautionary measures ahead of the floods. This year, we have learnt lots of things as a beginner. Now, we know everything. Considering the situation, we have taken some measures for next year, so that no one is affected next year for river erosions or any other reasons," he added.
