Kharghor Genocide Day observed at Nabinagar
NABINAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA, Oct 12: The Kharghor Genocide Day was observed at Kharghor Village under Nabinagar Upazila of the district on Thursday.
On October 10, 1971, during the Liberation War, Pakistani occupation forces killed 43 villagers including freedom fighters in Kharghor Village. Pakistani forces came through ship in the morning and attacked the village.
Following their sudden attack, freedom fighters were forced to retreat from Borail. In the meantime, some freedom fighters including Mohammad Golap of Borail died in a battle.
Some guerrilla groups of freedom fighters comprising Md Tajul Islam, Md Sohrawardi, Al Mamun were in Borail at that time. But they could not sustain for long in front of the Pakistani forces.
Before this, local collaborators and war criminals killed eight people of Hindu Community adjacent to Borail Bazaar on April 24, 1971.
To show respect to these martyrs, a Guard of Honour was given and flowers were placed to the memorial on Thursday morning.
Later, a discussion meeting was held where local lawmaker Mohammad Ebadul Karim Bulbul was chief guest.
Among others, Deputy Commissioner Hayat-Ud-Doula Khan, Police Super (SP) Anisur Rahman, Assistant SP (Admin) Alamgir Hossain, ASP (Nabinagar Circle) Mehedi Hasan, Nabinagar Upazila Chairman Mohammad Moniruzzaman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Masum, Vice Chairman Zakir Hossain Sadek, Officer-in-Charge of Nabinagar Police Station Ranjit Roy, local Awami League leaders- Shahriar Badal, Zahir Uddin Chowdhury Shahan, Nazrul Islam Naju, Md Nasir Uddin were present as special guests.
Freedom fighter Ali Akbar Molla presided over the programme.
