Bridge construction stopped for three years at Raninagar

RANINAGAR, NAOGAON, Oct 12: The construction of a foot bridge on Ratandari Canal at Sarbarampur Village in Raninagar Upazila of the district has remained stopped for the last three years.
As part of the construction work, the concerned contractor has built two pillars on two sides of the canal, but later stopped the work.
The people and the students of 10 villages under two unions in the upazila are suffering much while crossing the canal. Though they can cross it on foot in dry season, they have to use temporary bamboo bridge and personal boats to cross it in rainy season.
Locals said they often make the bamboo bridges in Sarbarampur-Bhabanipur Choutapara area of the upazila for movement. These bamboo bridges are the only medium of communication for the people of 10 villages, including Sarbarampur, Kashimpur, Dangapara, Enayetpur, Bhabanipur, and Durgapur under Kashimpur and Gona unions.
Sources said the Ratandari Canal is flowing through Kashimpur and Gona unions about seven km south-west from Raninagar Upazila Sadar.
To keep the water flow in the canal running, Local Government Engineering Department in Raninagar dug the canal from Kujail Sluice Gate to Raktadaha Beel (water body) in 2014. As a result, the water flow in the canal also increased. At that time, boat was the only medium of movement. As there was no direct communication, local farmers faced difficulty to carry and market their products.
To ease their sufferings, locals have been demanding construction of a permanent bridge in Sarbarampur-Bhabanipur Choutapara area for long. In response to the locals' demand, Raninagar Upazila Parishad called a tender worth Tk 1.85 lakh in March, 2016.
After finishing all the process, contractor Md Golam Kibria of Par-Naogaon Mahalla in Naogaon town got the bid to build the bridge. Accordingly, the contractor installed two pillars on the both sides of the canal, and later stopped the work. Though three years have passed, no visible initiative has been taken to build the bridge.
Chairman of Kashimpur Union Parishad Md Mokhlesur Rahman Babu said, "The upazila parishad sanctioned Tk 18.5 lakh from its development fund to construct the bridge in 2016. Following this, some works have been done, but it has remained stopped for the last three years. I have urged the concerned company to complete the work, but they are yet to restart it."
Upazila Engineer Md Saidul Islam Mia said it is necessary to complete the foot bridge. The construction will need more Tk 25 lakh now. As the upazila parishad does not have this fund, the bridge cannot be completed. So, they are thinking to complete the bridge by taking money from other sources.
