Karnaphuli situation is horrible, says Javed

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 12: The Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed said that the situation of the river Karnaphuli was horrible. He apprehended that the existence of the river would vanish in future, if the pollution had been continued at the present rate.
The Land Minister was speaking as the chief guest at a round table conference organized by the Channel "I" at Firinghee Bazar on Saturday morning. The Electronic Media Channel "I" organized the programme on the occasion of its 21st founding anniversary.
In this connection Saifuzzaman Chowdhury called upon all concerned to come forward protect this god-gifted river and the Port for the betterment of the nation.
Terming the Karnaphuli as a god-gifted and an important river, the Minister opined that such a river had been damaged due to pollution for negligence of the concerned organizations and the local people.
He commented that the river-bed of Karnaphuli had been silted badly.
He also advised the Chairman of the Chattogram Port authority to take an immediate and effective step for dredging of the Karnaphuli.
The Minister advised the CPA Chairman to frame a sustainable manual for the river.
Javed opined that the river had been polluted for the industrial wastes. So he preferred to remove the industrial installations from the bank of the river.




The Chattogram Mayor AJM Nasiruddin was present as the special guest, while CPA Chairman Rear Admiral Zulfiqar Aziz, CDA Chairman Jahirul Alam Dobhas, Chattogram WASA MD AKM Fazlullah, Tarafdar Ruhul Amin of Saif Powertech, BGMEA First VP M A Salam and Daily Azadi Editor M A Malek also spoke on the occasion.
Journalist Aliur Rahman read out the main paper while Channel I Bureau Chief Chowdhury Farid read out the address of welcome.
