Discussion on mental health at Eastern University


Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Clinical Psychology Department of Dhaka University & Bangladesh Clinical Psychology Society jointly organized a discussion session on `World Mental Health Day' at the CIRDAP auditorium on October 10, 2019. This year, the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) decided `suicide prevention' as the main theme of World Mental Health Day.
Honorable State Minister of Women and Children Affairs ministry Fajilatun Nesa Indira was the chief guest while Prof Dr Shahid Akhter Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University (EU), was the special guest and Secretary of the ministry Mrs Kamrun Nahar was presided over the programme.
Prof Dr Shahid Akhter Hossain said "Suicidal behavior has existed throughout human history. But due to several complex factors, it has increased gradually in all parts of the world and as well as in Bangladesh.  In the past few decades, it has reached alarming statistical levels. It is often believed that only adults who exhibit suicidal behaviors. But it should be made known that many children and young people engage in this kind of behavior as a result of violence, sexual abuse, bullying and cyber bullying".
