Agriculture must be diversified and profitable: Agriculture Minister

Honorable Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, MP, said, if we depend only on rice, it will not work. Agriculture has to be diversified and profitable. He said this while inaugurating the "Central Research Review and Programming Workshop-2019" of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) at Kazi Badruddoza auditorium of the institute yesterday.
BARI Director General Dr Abul Kalam Azad presided over the inaugural session while Honorable Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Agriculture Krishibid Abdul Mannan, MP, and Honorable Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Md Nasiruzzaman were present as special guests. Founder director (Retd) of BARI and Emeritus Scientists, NARS, Dr Kazi M Badruddoza was present at Honorable Scientist at the inaugural session. BARI Director (Research) Dr Md Abdul Wohab addressed the welcome speech and a brief Power Point presentation on the research activities and success of the institute. Director (Support & Services) Dr Babu Lal Nag gave the vote of thanks.
Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, MP, also added, before the election of 2008, we promised to the nation that we would at least make Bangladesh self-sufficient in the cereal crops and reduce poverty. By 2015 we have become self-sufficient in cereal crops. Today, everyone wants to make agriculture profitable. If agriculture is not profitable, why would farmers cultivate it? They have to sell their rice to cover their children's education and other expenses. So we have to diversify our agriculture.

He said, we don't have to depend only on rice. We have to produce other crops like fruits and vegetables. We need to be self-sufficient in nutrition and safe food. In view of this, we have increased the production of vegetables. There are many opportunities to export high value crops like fruits, vegetables and vegetables to the international market. But Bangladesh cannot export it as we don't have any accredited lab. So in BARI we are trying to have an international quality lab.
