Missing man found dead in Jamuna river

Local people recovered the body of a man from the Jamuna river in Sadar upazila of Sirajganj on Saturday, two days after he had gone missing in the river during a boat race (locally known as Nauka Baich).

Deceased Saidur Rahman Pramanik, 60, was a boatman and resident of Manikdia village in Ullapara upazila.

Sadar Police Station sub-inspector Azim said Saidur fell in the river and went missing after a boat of visitors hit their boat during a Nauka Baich competition in the district town Protection Embankment area on Thursday.

Deceased's nephew Aslam Uddin said the divers of Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defense concluded their two days' rescue operation as they could not trace the body.

Besides the divers, local people also conducted rescue operation and at last found the floating body in the river in southern area of the Bangabandhu Bridge.

Meanwhile, Hanif from Barishal district, who also went under the water after another boat of visitor's capsized in the river during the competition, could not be found yet, the SI added.
