Works of about 20 large government construction contracts involving over Tk 2,500 crore has remained suspended since September 20 this year after the arrest of SM Golam Kibria Shamim (GK Shamim).
GK Shamim who got all those construction contracts have remained suspended after his arrest for his proven involvement in casino busines.
Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Wednesday said that GK Builders, owned by disgraced Jubo League leader GK Shamim, will be served notice to stop work on all its government projects within two weeks.
The minister came up with the remarks after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman Dr Mozammel Haque Khan submitted a 20-point recommendation at the Public Works Department.
Although the Public Works Department (PWD) is trying to resume the work again, the officials and employees are not responding positively.
As a result, the authorities concerned of the construction works are in dilemma about how to complete the works, according to the Housing and Public Works Ministry and PWD sources.
Under this situation, the PWD authorities have been asked to take necessary legal steps against the construction companies including the companies of controversial contractor SM Golam Kibria Shamim (GK Shamim) immediately so that the works can be completed within the stipulated time.
As per the rules, if a construction company fails to continue its work for 28 consecutive days they are to be served notices to resume their works immediately.
If it fails to restart the work within the given period, the implementing authority will have the right to cancel the notification of award. Before cancellation of the work, the authority will assess the works already completed.
The PWD under the Public Works Ministry is likely to follow the procedure to complete the works awarded to GK Shamim's construction company GK Builders in time.
The ministry has asked the authority to follow the procedure as soon as possible, the sources said.
When contacted, Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Wednesday told this correspondent that not only the farms of GK Shamim, the PWD had also been asked to take legal steps against all the companies who are delaying in completion of the works they had been assigned.
