Three get life term, one jailed in four districts
Three men were sentenced to life-term imprisonment and a woman got one year jail on different charges in four districts- Khulna, Habiganj, Dinajpur and Natore, recently.
KHULNA: A court in the district on Wednesday sentenced two persons for life-term imprisonment for killing a student of Government B L College in the city in 2017.
The convicted are: Arif Sheikh, 30, and Rahmat Ali, 24. The court fined them Tk 5 thousand each, in default, they will be imprisoned one more year.
The court also acquitted other 12 people accused in the case.
Judge Md Nazrul Islam of Special Trial Tribunal of Khulna handed down the verdict in presence of all 14 people of the case.
Court Sources said, the two accused hacked Abdullah Al Foysal alias Shiplu Molla, 26, a fourth-year student of government B L College, to death at Deana Purbapara Hospital area in the city in June 20 of 2017.
The deceased's father Faruk Hossain Molla filed a murder case with Daulatpur Police Station (PS) the next day.
Inspector of Police Bureau of Investigation Sheikh Abu Bakkar pressed the charge-sheet to CMM court accusing 14 people on March 8 of 2018 in this connection.
HABIGANJ: A court in the district on Wednesday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for killing a nine-year-old boy in 2003.
Lifer Rayhan Miah, 31, is a resident of Dharmapur Village in Lakhai Upazila of the district.
The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer five more years in jail.
According to prosecution, Rayhan Miah took his co-villager Sharif Miah's son Rubel to a nearby haor to catch fish on August 8 in 2003. He tried to molest the child there but failed as Rubel resisted and started crying out. Then, he tied the minor with rope and threw in the water.
On August 11, police recovered his floating body from the haor.
Deceased's father filed a case with Lakhai PS accusing Rayhan on the day.
NATORE: A court here on Thursday sentenced a drug trader to 14-year imprisonment and also fined him Tk 50,000, in default to serve six more months in jail, for storing yaba in his house.
Convicted Selim Sheikh, 35, is the son of Golam Kibria of Kanaikhali Mahalla in Natore town.
Additional Judge of District and Sessions Judge Court Saifur Rahman Siddique declared the verdict.
Court Inspector Aminur Rahaman said police raided the mahalla on January 1, 2017, and arrested Selim along with 5,000 yaba tablets from his house.
Later, a case was filed in this connection, and after a long hearing, the judge declared the verdict.
BIRAMPUR, DINAJPUR: A mobile court here on Thursday sentenced a female drug trader to one-year jail in Birampur Upazila of the district.
Convicted Shefali Begum, 46, was the wife of Riazul Islam of Chawkpara Village under Birampur Municipality.
Sources said the convict had been peddling drugs in the area for long. Being intolerant, locals made a call to 999 and sought help from police.
Later, police arrested her and produced before the mobile court of executive magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Touhidur Rahman, who convicted her and awarded the punishment.
