Sonatala people cross bridge amid risk

BOGURA, Oct 9: People of Sonatala Upazila in the district have been crossing a bridge amid risk for long.
The bridge is located in Tekani-Chukainagar area of the upazila, and has become risky as the soil from the bridge's pillars has been removed due to strong current of flood water.
The soil from the pillars of many bridges in seven unions of the upazila has been removed due to the massive flood in 1988 and two-time flood this year. Now, transport movement through the bridges has remained stopped.
After the soil from the base of the bridge in Tekani-Chukainagar Kachari Bazaar area has been removed due to this year's flood, the vehicular movement has been stopped.
Local lawmaker Abdul Mannan made a wooden bridge there, and it became suitable for vehicular movement somehow. But, the bridge has also become risky.
Meanwhile, the two sides of a bridge on Sujaitpur-Baluahat road in Sadar Union of the upazila have broken and the transport movement has been stopped.
In this connection, Tekani-Chukainagar Union Parishad Chairman Principal Shamsul Haque said, most of the roads of his union have been damaged due to the two-time flood this year. Besides, many bridges and culverts have also become unsuitable for transport movement. Every day, thousands of people cross the bridge.
In this connection, Union Awami League President Md Zahidul Islam said, about 85 per cent people of the area depend on agriculture. Farmers used to carry their products to different markets through this bridge. But now they have to suffer much in this connection as the bridge has become risky.
While asked, Upazila Engineer of Local Government Department Imran Khan said, the bridges will be repaired after the flood.
