Some 19 fishermen have been detained in Ramgati and Kamalnagar upazilas of Laxmipur over catching hilsha fish in the Meghna river, despite there is government ban on catching and selling the fish during its breeding season from October 9 to 30.

The district fisheries officer SM Mohib Ullah said the fisheries department of Laxmipur raided in many areas in the river from early hours to Wednesday afternoon and detained the fishermen.

The department also seized 20,000 meters of banned current nets and two engine-run fishing boats from them.

Later, a mobile court, led by Ramgati upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Suchitra Ranjan Das and Kamalnagar UNO Imtiaz Hossain, jailed 14 of the detained people for one month and fined five others.
