Murder case accused killed in ‘gunfight’

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 21:  An  accused in a murder case was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Pataniagodha under Chandgaon Police Station in the port city early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Russel 29. A single barrel gun with a cartridge and four knives was recovered from the spot, said Mohammad Abul Kalam, officer in charge of Chandgaon Police Station.
Three people, including the deceased, were wanted in cable businessman Jhihad murder case lodged with Chandgaon Police Station in the city, added the OC.
Earlier, police arrested Russel from Dhaka and based on his secret information, a team of Chandgaon police reached the said area around 4:00am with Russel to arrest his cohort Azad. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, a gang of criminals opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, the OC added.
Russel sustained bullet wounds while trying to flee and died on the spot. Later, police recovered a single barrel gun with a cartridge from the spot.    -BSS
