BSMRSTU closed, students asked to vacate hall
Authorities have shut down Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) amid student protests for resignation of Vice Chancellor professor Dr Khondaker Nasir.
All students have been asked to leave respective halls by 10:00am on Saturday, said an office order issued this morning.
Signed by the university Registrar professor Dr Md Nur Uddin Ahmed, the order said leave was extended from September 22 to October 3 with stipulated vacation on the occasion of upcoming Puja aiming to keep convenient environment of education in emerged situation, resolve disparity among groups at loggerhead and avoid incidents that like to happen.
Students have been asked directed to leave residential halls by 10:00am for overall security of them, the order read.
Meanwhile, BSMRSTU students continued their protest for the third consecutive day on Saturday demanding VC's resignation.
The students started demonstration and protest rally in front of the VC’s office on Thursday morning. On the day, they declared fast-unto-death unless the VC resigns.
Students said they have not seen the order of shutting down university and leaving hall yet but the movement seeking resignation of VC will continue, they added.
Confirming the order, Registrar Nur Uddin said, "We have announced the university closed, and asked students to evacuate hall to tackle arisen situation."
Recently the university administration has expelled LLB (Honours) second year student and the university correspondent of The Daily Sun Fatema Tuz Zinia for her posts on social media on September 10.
Following this, different professional organizations protested the suspension order, mentioning it illegal, inhuman, barrier to freedom of speech and threat to journalism.
At the same time, they demanded VC Nasir's resignation for his involvement with different irregularities.
Protesting student Zahangir Alam said, "We demonstrated to realise our 14-point demand, including ensuring freedom of speech. The administration accepted the demands early hours of the day. Now, our movement is for VC's resignation."
