Copying plot from BD’s short film
When a new short film resembles much of an older one, it is assumed that the plot is either inspired or stolen. Such scenario is quite familiar. In Bangladesh, copying plots from Korean, Indian films are not rare practices. However this time just the opposite has happened.
A short film named 'The Old Man And The Girl' written and directed by Bangladeshi director Afzal Hossain Munna from 'Shevolution' anthology was streamed online months back. However, recently an Indian short film Chubhan directed by Sachin Arun Gokhale from a big online platform was released with distinct similarities with The Old Man And The Girl.
The story of The Old Man And The Girl is about a young lady who happens to get shifted to a new locality. She is not much confident about the neighbourhood and hence an old guy starts following her. At some point she learns that the old guy had a daughter who is no more and thus he grows concerned about the safety of the newly shifted young lady. Consequently, he starts following her, in a bid to lookout for her.
Story progression, character portrayal and the presentation are almost same. There are even some visual similarities. If we consider these as coincidences there should have been lot of differences as well. But rather more and more similarities pop up. Now this could rather be a moment for celebration if the due credit for taking inspiration was given to the original maker Afzal Hossain Munna.
Recently a national television covered this unfortunate incidence where the director claimed the originality and challenged the Indian director for such shameful act.
