ASI jailed over dollar snatching

A court in Dhaka has sentenced an assistant sub-inspector of Uttara East Police Station, and another man to two years imprisonment in a case filed for snatching away foreign currency worth around Tk 15 lakh.
Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Judge Debdas Chandra Adhikari pronounced the judgement on Thursday.
The convicts are: ASI Alamgir Hossain, and Masum Billah of North Shimulia under Dohar Police Station in Dhaka.
One Ilyas, the owner of HS Money Exchange at Latif Imperial Market in Uttara, filed the case.
In the complaint, Ilyas said a number of men introducing themselves as detectives picked up him in a white private car, Reg: Metro-Ga-19-0970, on April 4, 2017 from in front of Rajlaxmi Complex under Uttara East Police Station.
They blindfolded Ilyas and snatched away US dollar 18,800, equivalent to Tk 15,04,000, from his possession.
Hearing his cry for help, adjacent people caught Masum Billah while the rest four managed to flee.
During interrogation, Masum mentioned involvement of ASI Alamgir Hossain, Habib Dollar, Rashed and Sumon in the incident.
Police, later, arrested ASI Alamgir and recorded his confessional statement.
DB police sub-inspector Nur-e-Alam Siddik investigated the case and submitted charge sheet against Alamgir Hossain and Masum Billa and pleaded to drop names of Habib Dollar, Rashed, Md Sumon and Sajal from the case.
