Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the removal of the president and the general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for breaking organizational discipline is unprecedented in Bangladesh. The duo was forced to resign, he said.
The Road Transport and Bridges Minister said none will be spared if someone is found involved in any wrongdoings or irregularities as the government is showing zero-tolerance against corruption.
"The government is taking steps against those involved in corruption and irregularities. None will be spared," he told reporters after visiting the construction work of Bhulta Flyover at Rupganj in the district.
Quader, also Awami League (AL) General Secretary, said disciplinary actions have been taken against president and general secretary of BCL.
Organization steps were taken against them and they have been forced to resign, he said adding that there is no example of taking such actions in other student organizations.
He said Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself is monitoring the current situation of BCL and she has given the responsibility to acting president and acting general secretary to hold the next council of BCL.
About the national council of AL, Quader said his party is completely ready to hold the council. "Councils of some district, upazila and union units of the party are yet to be held. Councils of those organizational units of will be held by this time. National council will be held on December 20 and 21," he said.
He said the party has issued show-cause notices to 175 local rebel leaders who contested against the party-nominated candidates in the recent upazila parishad polls. Show-cause notices will also be served to patrons of those rebel leaders, he added.
About the work of upgrading the Dhaka-Sylet highway to a four-lane, the minister said a feasibility study has already been done in this regard and works will begin soon.
Bhulta Flyover Project Director Golam Haider Riaz, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid and Rupganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamtaz Begum were present on the occasion.
