TCB to begin OMS of onion from today

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) starts selling onion from today (Monday) in the open market (OMS) across the country to control prices although the price is yet to be fixed.
The decision has been taken at a Ministry of Commerce meeting at the Secretariat in the capital.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi presided over the meeting.
Officials at the TCB said that the corporation is likely to import 300 tonnes of onion from India.
The onion will be sold at 25 points in Dhaka city while it will be sold at 149 points in the other parts of the country, a TCB official said.
The corporation started selling onion in open market when the prices of onion skyrocketed just after the Eid-ul-Azha. Onion is being sold between Tk 65 and Tk 75 per kg at the local market.
The Commerce Ministry said in a press release, the Ministry has sent written to the Bangladesh Bank to open LC and reduce the interest rate on onion import loans.
Beside this, the Ministry sent another letter to the concerned office for the initiating onion import preparation at the ports and to ensure smooth transportation.
