Munajat offered to check river erosion at Sundarganj
GAIBANDHA, Sept 13: Locals offered munajat on the Teesta riverbank at Putimari under Sreepur Union in Sundarganj Upazila of the district on Thursday to check erosion by the river.
Local sources said the erosion has taken serious turn in Putimari and adjoining areas in recent times.
Hundreds of homesteads including arable land have already been devoured by the river.
Besides, the people living on the riverbank are under threat as their homesteads may be devoured by the river anytime if necessary measures to check the erosion are not taken immediately.
M Delwar Hossain, a local resident, said they informed the matter to Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), but there was no response.
Finding no way, they held the munajat seeking kindness of Almighty Allah so that the erosion can be checked.
More than 600 people including 60 hajjis participated in the munajat that was conducted by Mawlana Samesh Uddin.
Executive Engineer of BWDB Mokhlesur Rahman said a project proposal involving Tk 404 crore was sent to the Planning Commission Bangladesh through proper channel.
After the approval of the project by the ECNEC, the riverbank protection work would start soon, he added.
