25 info officers narrowly saved from accident
KHULNA, Sept 13: At least five people including bus conductor were injured early Thursday when some 25 passengers-bound bus fell off at the west side of Khanjahan Ali Bridge (Rupsha Bridge) area in the city.
The accident took place around 5am when the bus hit a road divider after driver lost his control over the steering, said locals and police.
Earlier, a Green Line Paribahan bus left Dhaka with 25 information officers (10-Grade) including trainers of three departments under the Ministry of Information; they were going to Khulna for a three-day visit as part of their nine-week training programme, said Moniruzzaman Mithu, additional deputy police commissioner of the KMP.
The five injured men were given treatment at Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), he said adding that the driver managed to flee after the mishap.
Assistant Information Officer, who is also a passenger of the bus Ferdous Hossain said, they were coming to a field visit in Khulna from the capital on Wednesday night. The bus passengers including 14 members of the Directorate of Mass Communication, nine members of Institution of National Mass Media, and two members of the Directorate of Information narrowly escaped the accident.
Quoting witnesses, Towfiq Ahmed Rony, a system engineer and also toll collector of Rupsha Bridge, told the Observer that the bus driver was sleeping during the accident.
Law-enforcement agencies seized the bus, he said adding that around 30 to 35 foot road divider, one pillar and 12 safety guards have been damaged during the accident.
