Lalmohan farmers benefit from sugarcane cultivation
LALMOHAN, BHOLA, Sept 13: This year farmers have benefited more by cultivating sugarcane in Lalmohan Upazila of the district.
This has given a glimpse of smile on their faces.
Of the sugarcane, "Gendari" and "208" varieties have been cultivated in about 65 hectares of land in the upazila.
Farmer Md Russell of Dhaligouranagar Union in the upazila said, "I cultivated sugarcane in about 80 per cent of my lands this year spending about Tk 90,000. I hope to earn about Tk 90,000 to 1 lakh excluding all costs."
Farmers Arzu and Siddique of the same union said, "We cultivated sugarcane in about 128 per cent land this year spending about Tk 1.5 lakh. We hope to earn Tk 1.80 lakh as profit excluding all costs."
On the other hand, farmer Mizanur Rahman of Lord Hardinge Union in the upazila said, "I cultivated sugarcane in 40 per cent land this year. However, due to water-logging in my field, a lot of sugarcane has been damaged. But, still I hope to earn Tk 30,000 to 40,000 as profit."
In this connection, Upazila Agriculture Officer AFM Shahabuddin said, "We provide advices and free fertilisers to sugarcane farmers so that they become interested in the cultivation, because sugarcane farming is more profitable than other crops at low cost. Besides, we advised farmers to stay alert from diseases and insects. This year the profit of sugarcane farmers is likely to be much higher than last year."
