Pirojpur farmers fetch profit from farming betel leaf on homesteads
PIROJPUR, Sept 13: Farmers of Santiher, Kuniari and adjacent villages under Sutiakhati Union in Nesarabad Upazila of the district have become solvent cultivating betel leaf on their homesteads.
Betel leaf farmer of Santiher Village Md Heru Mia, 32, his wife Sadia Begum, 22, and mother Beauty Begum, 60, work together in their betel leaf garden on the homestead.
Heru Mia said, "We lost everything in river erosion. Later, we moved to Santiher Village. I started betel leaf cultivation on the homestead of 1,700 square feet along with a garden of about 4,000 square feet."
He also said, "In the last betel leaf season, I earned an average Tk 10,000 per month. During the peak season, the price of betel leaf is low as the supply is most, but in winter the price is high due to less supply and production."
Farmer Fazlul Haque of Kuniari Village said, "My wife helps me in producing betel leaf on my homestead. Most of the families in the locality are faming betel leaf on their homesteads because it is easy to take care of the plants. It needs less labour, money, time and other inputs for expected result. So, homestead betel leaf farming is becoming more profitable than other crops."
Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Md Shefat Sikder said, most of the farmers in the areas are hardworking and innovative. They always think how to improve the production of agricultural products. Many women also help their husbands to get maximum output.
