Drop 'Kumari' from marriage certificate: HC

The High Court has directed the government to remove the term 'Kumari', or maiden, from the Nikahnama (Muslim marriage certificate) and replace it with the word 'unmarried' in the case of the bride.

The court at the same ordered the authorities to amend the form to include the terms 'unmarried, widower or divorced' for the groom.

The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Khijir Ahmed Chowdhury passed the order on Sunday, settling a rule on the amendment of the Nikahnama under section 9 of the Bangladesh Muslim Marriage & Divorce (Registration) Act, 1974.
