Although the Election Commission has not yet declared schedule for holding the by-elections to Rangpur-3, the parliamentary seat of former Jatiya Party Chairman and President HM Ershad, several leaders of Jatiya Party including some family members of the party have been taking preparations for contesting the poll likely to be held by October 13 this year.
At least six leaders and Ershad's family members have been taking preparations to contest the polls. Some of them are adamant to contest the poll, even if they do not get party ticket.
After the death of the former President on July 14 this year, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad declared Ershad's seat vacant on July 16. The letter of the Sangsad was sent to the EC for taking further steps to fill up the vacancy by holding due election process.
As per the rules, the EC must hold by-election to a vacant seat within 90-days of declaring the seat vacant after death or resignation or removal of a parliament member (MP).
Following the provisions, the EC will have to hold the by-election within October 13 this year. Although the EC has not yet declared poll schedule, it's taking preparation to hold the polls within October 10. But, the poll
might be held on October 1 or 3, the EC sources claimed.
To hold the election within the period, the EC may announce the polls schedule by this month.
Meanwhile, the leaders of Jatiya Party have also started taking preparations to participate in the upcoming by-election in the vacant seat of the party's former chairman.
To select the party candidate for the constituency, the JaPa on Saturday formed an eight-member parliamentary board comprising its present Chairman GM Quader and Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga. Other members of the board are- Presidium Members Kazi Firoz Rashid, Golam Kibria Tiup, Sheikh Sirajul Islam, Mamdudul Islam Chowdhury, Shamim Haider Patwary and Masud Uddin Chowdhury.
According to the party sources, all of the board members are well-known as GM Quader's follower in the party. No one of the followers of Raushan Ershad, wife of Ershad and senior Co-Chairman of the party, has been given chance in the board.
As a result, there is no chance of getting party ticket for Raushan's followers, it's apprehended.
According to the party leaders, Ershad's expatriate younger brother Dr. HM Murshed, nephew former MP Asif Shahriar, niece and former MP Merina Rahman's daughter Mehejabunnesa Rahman Tupma have been trying to get party ticket for the seat.
At the same time, name of Raushan and Ershad's son Shad Ershad is also in discussion. Raushan and her followers have been trying to ensure Shad's ticket.
On the other side, party's presidium members and billionaire SM Fakhruzzaman and Rangpur city JaPa general secretary SM Yasir are also trying for party ticket. Local people are also giving supports for the two leaders partially.
In this situation, top leaders of Jatiya Party are confused about their party candidate for the seat. Final decision on the nomination can only be taken in the party's top forum after primary selection in the party's nomination board.
When contacted, Party's Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga told this correspondent that it has not yet been discussed in the party forum. The local leaders will be requested to send four names for the nomination. Following the selection, the party's presidium will finalise the nomination.
