Eight killed as bus falls of bridge in Faridpur

FARIPUR, Aug 24: At least eight people were killed and 25 others injured as a Gopalganj-bound bus fell off a bridge in Sadar upazila on Saturday.
The identities of the deceased could not be known as of filing of this report at 6:00pm. Police said the accident occurred in Dhuldi area on the Dhaka-Faridpur Highway around 2:30pm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) FM Nasim of Sadar Police Station said a 'Comfort Paribahan' bus veered off a bridge and fell into a ditch at Dhuldi, killing six people on the spot and injuring 27 others in the afternoon.
The injured were taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital (FMCH) and two of them succumbed to their injuries at the hospital soon after admission, said Assistant Deputy Director Shawkat Ali of district fire service.
Police Superintendent Mostafizur Rahman of Faridpur region's Highway said the driver lost control over the steering of the bus while allowing a speeding motorcycle to pass.
In Bogura, an army sergeant was killed and six others injured after a passenger bus overturned at Rahobol on Rangpur-Bogura Highway in Shibganj upazila in the morning, reports our correspondent.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Aziz, 35, of Laxmipur district. He was posted in Bandarban.
Abdul Quader Zilani, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Highway Police Station, said the bus overturned around 7:00am, killing Aziz on the spot and injuring six others.
Locals took the injured to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex. Police have seized the bus.
Our Kurigram correspondent reported that a woman was killed in a road accident in Fulbari upazila of the district on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Fatema Begum, wife of Musa Mia of Panmachkuti village in the upazila. Locals said a motorcycle hit Fatema while she was crossing Fulbari-Nagershari Road around 10:00am.
She was admitted to Fulbari Upazila heath Complex and then shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at 4:30pm.
