JOYPURHAT, Aug 23: Joypurhat Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) has completed electrification in the entire district by providing 2,39,842 connections.
PBS sources said Kalai and Khetlal upazilas were declared as one hundred per cent electrified upazilas among five upazilas of the district. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced this 100 per cent electrification of the two upazilas through a video conference from Ganabhaban on August 5 last year.
The government's vision put forward with the slogan of 'Sheikh Hasinar Uddyog, Ghar-e Ghar-e Bidyut' in the remaining three upazilas since then.
Meanwhile, General Manager (GM) of Joypurhat PBS Md Rabiul Haque confirmed that 100 per cent electrification in the district has been completed.
The PBS started the work of electrification in the district in 1986.
The power department has made a remarkable progress under this government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The district does not even suffer from any load shedding nowadays. Before the present government came to power, the power consumers of the district suffered a lot caused by load shedding during the previous government.
Electricity is now available in four municipalities and 923 villages.
According to the target set for 100 per cent electrification, 2,39,842 connections have been already provided in various areas of the district. These include 2,16,898 residential connections, 11,980 commercial connections, 1,815 deep tube-well connections, 3,242 shallow tube-well connections, 3,595 charity connections, 1,840 general power connections, and 70 large power connections. For this electrification, a total of 505.204 km power lines were set up in the five upazilas.
To supply uninterrupted power, one 5 MVA, five 10 MVA, one 15 MVA and two 20 MVA sub-stations with a capacity of 120 MW have been set up. A total of 320 officials of Joypurhat PBS are currently appointed to look after this.
GM Rabiul Haque said the percentage of collecting electricity bills is 98.94 per cent now. Now there is no load shedding, but there can be a slight problem due to mechanical faults and maintenance work, he added. Joypurhat Sadar, Panchbibi and Akkelpur upazilas are now waiting for the announcement by the Prime Minister as hundred per cent electrified upazilas in the district.
