Dengue scare refuses to go; another 5 die, 1,597 infected


Five more people have died of dengue and 1,597 new infections have been recorded across the country.

The new deaths were reported in Dhaka, Barishal and Khulna on Thursday while the fresh infections across the country in 24 hours till Thursday morning.

According to the government, 59,592 patients infected with dengue were hospitalised and 53,398 of them discharged after treatment since the beginning of this year.

The deceased were identified as Gias Uddin, 40, son of Abdul Awal of Chandpur; Monir Hossain, 38, son of Shahjahan Mia of Mehendiganj upazila in Barishal, Alauddin Hossain, 14, son of Sirajul Islam Gazi of Kaliganj in Satkhira, Tasmim, 17, of Zinjira in Keraniganj of Dhaka, and Tasnin, 35, of Jurain in the capital.

Bachchu Mia, inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said Gias, who was residing in Postagola in the capital, was admitted to the hospital with high fever around 11pm on Wednesday.

“He was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit where he died around 6:20am today (Thursday),” he said.

Gias, a father of three, was a businessman, said Jahangir, his elder brother.

At Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, Tasmim and Tasnin lost their battle to dengue early Thursday, said Assistant Director of Dengue Control Cell of the hospital Dr Abdur Rashid.

In Barishal, Monir succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in the morning.

SBMCH Director Dr Bakir Hossain said Monir was hospitalised after being diagnosed with dengue on August 18. He died around 5am.

In Khulna, teenage boy Alauddin died at a private hospital in the afternoon.

Civil Surgeon Dr Abdur Razzaque said the madrasa student was detected with dengue on August 19 and was receiving treatment at a hospital.

He was shifted to Gazi Medical College Hospital in the morning as his condition deteriorated where he lost his battle, he said.
 
Currently, 6,147 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals and clinics, according to the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services.

The government has so far confirmed the deaths of 47 people but unofficial estimates suggest the death toll is much higher.
