4 get life term in triple murder cases

A court in Habiganj on Thursday convicted four people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in two cases filed over triple murder in Baniachang upazila in 1998.
The lifers are: Torab Ali, Suruj Mia, Ali Mohammad, and Karam Ali.They all are residents of Puran Patharia village in Baniachang upazila. The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer two years' more rigorous imprisonment.
Additional District and Sessions Judge SM Nasim Reza handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts.
According to the prosecution, Ali Mohammad and Karam Ali of Puran Patharia village had long been at loggerhead over the ownership of a pond.
On September 29,1998, Karam Ali's supporter Sayed Mia and Mohammad Ali locked in an altercation over bathing in the disputed pond that led to a clash.
Equipped with lethal weapons, both groups swooped on each other, leaving Mohammad Ali's supporter Nur Mohammad dead on the spot and many others from both sides injured.
Of the injured, Shamsul Haque died at Habiganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital while Afil Uddin on way to Sylhet. They both were supporters of Karam Ali.
After the clash, Mohammad Ali lodged a case with Baniachang Police Station against 100 people in connection with the death of Nur Mohammad while deceased Afil's wife Atikunnesa filed another case against 46 people in Afil Uddin and Shamsul Haque murder.
On August 11, 1999, SI Amarendra Mallik, the investigation officer of the cases, submitted chargesheets before the court accusing 103 people in Nur Mohammad murder case and 62 people in Afil Uddin and Shamsul Haque murder case
After examing the records and witnesses, the court sentenced Torab Ali, Suruj Mia, Ali Mohammad to life term in jail in Afil Uddin and Shamsul Haque murder case while awarded Karam Ali life imprisonment in Nur Mohammad murder case.
