Making Dhaka Smart
A conversation with Shehzad Noor Taus Priyo, Co-founder and CEO of Gaze Technology.
What is Gaze about?
Gaze is an artificial intelligence company focused on building intelligence software for cameras, focusing on face recognition, license plate recognition, vehicle detection, automated surveillance alerts, etc.
When did it all start and what inspired you to turn Dhaka to a smart city?
I worked at NVIDIA, the world's #1 manufacturer and designer of processors used in AI (GPUs). My team there focused on building technologies that can power AI cities and make the world a safer place. That's when I thought about Dhaka and other cities worldwide. Motasim Bir Rahman and I have been friends for a very long time, so I spoke to him and we decided to start Gaze with a mission to change the world. Thus, I left NVIDIA mid-2018.
We envisioned a world where AI can safeguard human life. Where AI can detect and recognize any threat, emergency, traffic law violation, etc. in real-time on a nationwide scale and take action such as alerting emergency services or law enforcers. Our aim is to significantly improve our living standards, making our cities safer and smarter. That has been our goal from Day 1. We slowly attracted like-minded people to the team and grew to almost 20 people in a year.
We also want Dhaka to be one of the most prominent tech hubs in the world and to make that happen, we must excel in next-generation technologies like AI, which is what Gaze hopes to do.
Could you please tell us a bit about your operations?
We have a very agile approach - our team is constantly communicating with our customers to learn more about what can better serve them. We also maintain a flat organizational structure where we value everyone's opinions and feedback within the company.
We believe our technologies can revolutionize multiple aspects of society. We can improve road safety by enforcing traffic rules using AI that can constantly monitor all traffic cameras 24/7 and penalize any law violator. Furthermore, our enterprise software can be used to automate different things in manufacturing and at any workplace, leading the way into Industry 4.0.
