AL on the lookout for mayor candidates for Dhaka, Ctg
Awami League has started groundwork to select its mayor candidates for Dhaka and Chattogram city corporations to retain stronghold in the cities vital for power politics.
The party will focus on three criteria-- popularity, engagement with party activities and capability to perform the mayoral duties-- to choose the mayor candidates.
Elections to Dhaka city corporations are likely to be held in December and Chattogram in March.
The three cities- Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chattorgram City Corporation (CCC) went to elections on April 28 in 2015.
The first meeting of the DNCC was held on May 14 and of the DSCC on May 17 and of the CCC on August 6.
As per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, election will be held within 180 days before the expiry of the tenure which starts from the day of the first meeting.
Alongside the city elections, the Awami League is also considering the matter of fielding candidate in HM Ershad's parliamentary seat as the seat fell vacant after his death.
Awami League Presidium Member Faruk Khan told The Daily Observer, "The matter of fielding party candidate in the vacant parliamentary seat of late HM Ershad is under our consideration now.
"However, the relation with Jatiya Party is also under our consideration"
Faruk Khan said the party led by Sheikh Hasina will take the decision on the Ershad's seat after the announcement of the poll-schedule in the seat.
The AL leader said they had started conducting survey to select the eligible mayor candidates to win the three city elections.
The party members having the capability of discharging the mayoral duties properly must have popularity and engagement with party activities to get the party nomination, he said.
Faruk Khan said the current mayors may retain their nomination or new faces may come but scoring highest pointes in the three criteria will be the determining factors.
A central AL leader said Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina will take the ultimate decision with regard to the party nomination.
She will take the reports of the responsible leaders into consideration and will also consider the report of the agencies, he said.
According to sources, many councilors will not get the party nomination or backing as the local AL leaders and activists and the inhabitants are not happy with their activities.
According to AL central leaders, the AL aspirants for Dhaka North city include current mayor Atiqul Islam, former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, and AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
For Dhaka South City either current mayor Sayeed Khokon or former MP and Bangladesh Medical Association President Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin or Dhaka South City AL General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad might be taken as the mayor candidate.
In Chattogram City, current mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, AL Organising Secretary and Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Jubo League Chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Chattogram Unnyan Kartipakkha former chairman Abdus Salam and current MP of Raozan ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury are likely to be in the race as mayor candidates.
