Mob beat police source for impersonating magistrate
Angry mob mercilessly beat up a police informant for pretending to be a magistrate for extortion in Bandar upazila of Narayagnaj.
Two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Bandar Police Station who allegedly have been assisting the source in the misdeeds, however, managed to escape the scene.
Local sources said police informant Shameem, introducing himself as a magistrate, went in Sabdi area on Saturday evening to collect toll from makeshift shops on the bank of the Brahmaputra River.
At one stage, local shopkeepers wanted to see his identity card. As Shameem failed to his ID card, angry people gave him a good thrashing.
ASIs Aminul and Anwar of Bandar Police Station who were also present there, quickly left the place sensing trouble.
Later, police rescued Shameem and took him into custody.
Locals alleged that Shameem used to take toll from the shops in assistance with ASIs Aminul and Anwar.
Inspector (Investigation) Azharul Islam said they detained Shameem following complaint by locals. They will also investigate whether police have any link in the alleged extortion, he added.
