Russell Domingo has finally been named as the Bangladesh national cricket team’s head coach, beating other two strong candidates, who were believed to be ahead of him in terms of name and fame.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) though officially didn’t disclose the name of the other two contenders; it is believed Mike Hesson and Mickey Arthur were the two coaches who gave their interview through video conference, reports BSS.
Hesson was the architect of New Zealand’s overwhelming success in International cricket while Arthur supervised Pakistan in the last four years with utmost success including helping them win the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.
But still BCB chose Domingo as their preferred coach. It is also believed the financial matter was the reason to choose Domingo ahead of them but what BCB prioritized most was Domingo’s intention to work even with the aged level team.
“The most important thing was, availability,” BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon said here on Saturday after announcing the coach’s name.
“The situation we have right now, if you see, there is a good possibility some new players might get into the team in the upcoming World Cup. We may need some replacement in some positions. So if you see from that side, we have to make way for those new players in a proper planning.
“So, Russell Domingo too had the same thing in his mind. He wants to work integrating under-19, national team and all the teams together and he has been doing it so far in South Africa,” Papon clarified.
Russell was the one, who gave interview in person while the other coaches took part in interview process through video conference. At the same time what pleased BCB most was that Domingo said he does not any vacation.
“He came up here by with presentation with four years of planning. Others also had their presentation but it was virtually. So from this side he was ahead of everyone. We initially contracted him for two years. He said, he does not need any vacation. So these are the main thing we considered and that has put him ahead in the selection criteria.”
Papon however thanked the other coaches who showed their intention to be the coach of Bangladesh.
“There were so many aspirants amongst which we shortlisted three. We are very happy that the high profile coaches showed their showed their intention to work with us and I thank them all for that.”
