BTA demands withdrawal of rawhide export decision
Tanners have demanded withdrawal of the government decision to export rawhide to save the industry.
Bangladesh Tanners' Association (BTA) came up with t he demand at an emergency press conference held at its office in city's Dhanmondi area on Wednesday.
The government on Tuesday took a decision to export rawhide aiming to ensure fair prices for traders.
In the press conference BTA president Shahin Ahmed said, "We'll start collecting hide from August 20. The market situation is expected to remain stable at that time. Hopefully, the government may step aside from the decision by this time."
Apprehending that the decision will threaten the country's tannery industry, he also said an investment of around Tk 7,000 crore in the leather industry will be at risk.
"The modern leather industry in Savar will be destroyed due to lack of rawhide. People involved with the industry directly or indirectly will become unemployed that leads to create labour unrest," said the BTA president.
