Three drug traders among five killed in ‘gunfights’

Five people, including three drug traders, were killed in 'gunfights' in Cox's Bazar, Mymensing and Habiganj early Monday.
In Cox's Bazar, two alleged drug traders, including a Rohingya, were killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila.
The deceased were identified as Delwar Hossain Dilu, 30, a resident of Satghoriya Para of Hoaingkyang Nayabazar, and Nurul Islam, 27, of No 2 Rohingya camp in Kutupalang.
Receiving information that a big consignment of Yaba tablets will be smuggled into the country from Myanmar, a team of BGB took position in Moulvibazar area near the Naf River around 3:00am, said Maj Shariful Islam Jomaddar, deputy commanding officer of BGB Battalion-2 in Teknaf.
Sensing the presence of the team, the gang opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate. Later, the BGB men found bullet-hit Delwar and Nurul.
The injured drug traders were first taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the doctors referred them to Cox's Bazar Hospital. They, later, died on way to Cox's Bazar.
Around 20,000 Yaba tablets, two firearms, four cartridges and two machetes were recovered from the spot.
In Mymensingh, a gang-rape accused and a suspected drug trader were killed in 'gunfights' with the detectives in Fulbaria and Sadar upazilas.
The deceased were identified as Jahirul Islam, 20, and Jony Miah, 26.
Officer- in-charge Shah Kamal Akand of the district DB police said a team of law enforcers conducted a drive in Kaladoh area of Fulbaria upazila to arrest an accused in a gang rape case around 2:30 am.
Sensing the presence of the team in Eidgah ground area, the accused and his cohorts threw brick-chips on them and also opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.
The DB police, later, found bullet-injured Jahirul on the scene. He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.  Police also recovered a pipe gun from the spot.
Jahirul and two others were accused in a case for gang raping a 16-year-old girl on August 3 at Palashtoli village in the upazila.
Later, a case was filed with Fulbaria Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Suspected drug trader Jonny Miah was killed during an exchange of fire with the DB police at Char Puliamari area in Sadar upazila at midnight. Around 20 grams of heroin and a gun were recovered from the scene.
Jonny was accused in 11 cases. The victim's aunty Shahida said Jonny had been missing since August 4.
In Habiganj, an alleged robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Chunarughat upazila.
The deceased was identified as Soleman. He hailed from Kulaura area of Moulvibazar.
Chunarughat Police Station Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Nazmul Haque said law enforcers, acting on a tip-off, conducted a drive at Dewatoli Kalinagar area of Shankhola union where a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery around 3:00am.
Sensing the presence of the team, the gang members opened fire on the police personnel, prompting them to retaliate. Police, later found bullet-injured Soleman on the scene. He died on way to a local hospital.
The OC said four policemen sustained during the gunfight. They are undergoing treatment at Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex.
