JU students stage demo over fellow’s death for dengue
Jahangirnagar University's U Khein Nu, a first year student of Pharmacy Department and residential student of Pritilata Hall, died of dengue fever on Saturday.
Her funeral completed at Cox's Bazar central Rakhine crematorium on Sunday around 2:00pm. Prof Dr Sukalyan Kumar Kundu of Pharmacy department confirmed it.
Meanwhile, the shadow of mourning has dropped on the university campus and the students have come down in agitation on her death. They demanded the compensation for her death. On Sunday, they took a silent procession from the Central Shaheed Minar premises of the campus at 11:00pm and staged a sit in programme in front of the administrative building.
They demanded to take necessary steps to prevent dengue in every hall and department, to provide necessary equipment to the university medical center to test dengue, including providing compensation to his family within five hours. In addition, they announced the exclusion of class-examinations if the administration did not accept their demand. The acting proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan came to the site at 11:00pm and told the protesters to go back to the hall but they disagreed with him.
Around 12:00pm, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Farzana Islam, Pro-VC (Education) Prof Dr Nurul Alam, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Amir Hossain, Treasurer Prof Sheikh Md Manjurul Haque came to the spot and spoke to the students. The VC-led team promised that, "Necessary steps will be taken after discussion with the university administration to prevent the dengue as soon as possible".
