Latkan farming increases in Narsingdi District
NARSINGDI, July 22: The farmers of the district get a way to be successful by cultivating seasonal fruit 'latkan'. The fruit is now being exported also. Commercially latkan cultivation has increased as the demand increased inside and outside the country. As a result, the number of latkan farmers and cultivating lands have risen.
Few years back, in front of the houses in Shibpur, Belab and Raypur upazilas latkan trees were seen. The fruit was not famous at that time. So the farmers did not think of commercial farming of this fruit.
Day by day the demand of the fruit is increasing as it is full of vitamin. The farmers are now interested in latkan cultivation.
But this year, due to heavy rainfall, the production is less, said the farmers.
Latkans are traded in the gardens. Whole sellers also come to Morjal and Shibpur bazaars of the district to buy latkan. Various types of the fruit are being sold at the expense of Tk 60-120 per kg.
Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension here Shovon Kumar Dhar said, every year the number of latkan farmers are increasing as they are getting profit from this.
By building fruit processing centre, latkan can be used in many ways, he added.
This year 1,580 hector lands came under latkan cultivation. Every hector is supposed to produce 15 metric tonnes, so the production will be 23,700 metric tonnes. The wholesale price of the fruit is Tk 70 per kg.
